Iceland's capital might be closer to the Arctic Circle than most vacation destinations, but when it comes to hospitality, Reykjavik is anything but cold. Whether you're chasing the Northern Lights, planning to soak in geothermal pools, or simply want a stylish base for exploring this volcanic wonderland, finding the right place to rest your head is crucial—especially after a day of pronouncing Icelandic place names (good luck with Eyjafjallajökull).
From luxury retreats nestled in lava fields to boutique hotels in the heart of downtown's buzzing 101 district, Reykjavik offers accommodations as diverse as its landscape. You'll find everything from Art Deco elegance to cutting-edge Nordic design, often with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame views of colorful rooftops, dramatic mountains, or the glittering harbor. Many properties embrace Iceland's geothermal gifts with on-site hot tubs and spas, while others double as art galleries showcasing local talent.
The best part? Most hotels sit within walking distance of Laugavegur—Reykjavik's main shopping street—putting you steps away from cozy cafes, craft beer bars, and restaurants serving everything from traditional Icelandic lamb to inventive Nordic cuisine. And with the midnight sun in summer or aurora-hunting opportunities in winter, you'll want a comfortable retreat to return to after your adventures.
Ready to find your perfect Reykjavik base? Here are the city's top hotels that combine Icelandic charm with serious comfort.

Center Hotels Skjaldbreið

Center Hotels Skjaldbreið sits right on Reykjavik's main shopping street, making everything walkable. The staff were genuinely helpful—whether calling tour companies or bringing extra coffee to our room, nothing was too much trouble.
Our corner room was spacious with huge windows overlooking the street. Yes, the shower was tiny (typical European style), but we weren't spending much time there anyway. Housekeeping kept everything spotless, and the continental breakfast offered a nice variety, though the dining room was cozy.
Fair warning: the neighboring bars stay lively until late. Even with closed windows, you'll hear the music. Light sleepers should pack earplugs. Also, there are steps at the entrance, so it's not ideal for limited mobility.
The location and friendly service made our stay worthwhile, just know what you're getting into noise-wise!
Icelandic Apartments by Heimaleiga

We stayed here, bookending our Iceland trip, and found it a convenient, budget-friendly option in the quiet suburbs. The apartment was spacious and modern, with a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable bed, and stunning views. The self-check-in system worked smoothly, and staff responded quickly to inquiries. Location is excellent—minutes from Perlan, the city center, and the airport, with a Bonus grocery store across the street and ample parking.
However, cleanliness was inconsistent. While some areas were spotless, we noticed worn furniture and missing amenities like towel racks. The shared laundry facilities were problematic with limited availability and malfunctioning equipment. The sulfur smell from the hot water was stronger than expected.
Overall, the Icelandic Apartments by Heimaleiga is a decent value in Reykjavik, especially for self-catering travelers, but management could improve maintenance standards.
